When I started creating art, I mainly wanted to try to give an impression of something that I liked. I did not think yet about with which media that could be done. Watercolour was obvious. You don't have to make a huge investment to get started, just a good quality watercolour paper and a good brand of paint. It is very important to start with good material, beautiful pigments and paper that can handle water without breaking.
Then I tried many different media and materials.
During my first drawing and painting course I started with watercolor. It was a discovery of how I can make paper, pigment and water work for me. Sometimes I wood discover unexpected effects, after which I would consciously apply those effects. You start with very little pigment, as morecan be added, but if ther's too much on the paper correction is almost impossible. Watercolour is a wonderful thing to do.
The soft tones, ideal for landscapes, but quite difficult for portraits.
A sepia-colored pigment, originally made from, for example, soot deposits from the chimney. For sale in crystal form. It can be processed as a watercolour, the more water added, the lighter the resulting colour.
Very nice for cityscapes, but can also be used for portraits.
You want to learn everything, including painting on canvas. To create a larger work, acrylic on canvas is a great combination. The big advantage is that you can always correct. There are almost endless colours available, and they also mix very well, allowing you to create your own shades. It is easy to work with, however acrylic dries a bit quickly when you are outside in the sun painting.
I make sure that the colors do not become too harsh.
If you want to learn everything, you also have to learn to work with oil paint.
I combined the course 'oil painting' with making portraits under the guidance of Isabelle Nugues.
I don't like the smell of the solvents, and I also think that cleaning the brushes is quite harmful to the environment.
The big advantage of oil paint is that it dries very slowly. You can let the colors merge nicely, you can even mix colors on the canvas if you want.
Finally, as far as I'm concerned, is learning to work with ink. I have tried it on occasion, but I have little experience with it. Who knows, maybe that will come later.
